Spain and Portugal

We left Iceland in July, during the Icelandic « summer » and we quit France few days before autumn arrived. Same with Spain. We spent a month in Lisbon and we sailed to Algarve (south Portugal) when the cold and bad weather arrived. We are like nomads following the season.

Visiting, bicycling, swimming, diving, relaxing in sun, meeting nice people, visiting other travelling boats and sharing experiences is how we spend our days. Sometimes we even meet the same people going same way as us. For example we sailed from La Rochelle to Lisbon with Spica, a fast cruising catamaran sailed by a nice french couple. These meetings are important because not only they make us spend a really nice moment, but they make us learn lot of things that can completely change your plans for the rest of the voyage.

We also still have a lot of work on the boat which is not completely finished. I am fully aware how luxury the life is that we are experiencing right now. Wake up when we feel like it, cooking excellent meals, no stress, no hurry. But we worked for it. Of course sometimes there are bad nights and stressful days when the wind picks up and you wonder if the anchor will hold, but so far it hasn’t moved a cm during more than 100 days in anchoring so I should maybe stop worrying. But when the wind whistles in the halyards and cables, I always find it stressful, but it’s few days by month, really fast forgotten. If you have plenty of money you can always go to harbor and then there is no problem at all. But in harbor, first thing in the morning will not be taking a sea-bath…nothing is perfect.

We stopped in La Coruna in Spain. It’s an important town of Galicia (north west part of Spain). Center town and the cost line along the sea are beautiful.

Then we stopped in the bay of Vigo. Vigo is the most important town of Galicia. It’s the biggest industrial and fishing harbor of Spain. The city of Vigo has nothing special for tourism but the bay is beautiful. The isles of Cies are famous. It’s a natural park. And the rest of the bay is also interesting. At the bottom, it offers an all weather anchorage. Good in winter time.

Then we went to Lisbon. Lisbon, capital of Portugal is an interesting city. Many things to do. We spent a month in Lisbon, meet really nice people, seeing beautiful places, got really nice time with perfect weather, dive, spearfishing, work on the boat. It was nice.
